Internal External
You are tasked with redesigning a long lighter handle that houses internal lighting mechanism and fuel. A common goal of product design is to make a complex object appear to be simple. This is usually accomplished by enclosing parts that don’t require user interaction in a hollow form. Access to the parts is normally necessary during the manufacturing process and to perform repairs or replenish consumable supplies. These housings almost always have an obvious seam (known as a parting line) which makes them possible to manufacture and repair. This is a quick exercise. Keep it simple!
Process:
- Buy and disassemble a long lighter (aka candle lighter or bbq lighter). Save the internal parts and the long metal tube. These parts are necessary for your final model
- Study the design of the current handle including voids for parts and openings for the lighter trigger, flame level, refill access, etc.
- Mockup your initial ideas at 1:1 scale using polystyrene foam. These forms are not required to show voids or openings, but you should be mindful of the space needed for internal parts as part of your exploration.
- Refine 2 of them including voids and openings using polyurethane foam. Use the existing internal parts to ensure that your voids and openings are appropriately positioned and scaled. Your design will likely be constructed as two parts although they are not necessarily required to be symmetric.
- Continue to refine your design into a final design that is more comfortable and more visually appealing than the original
- Assemble the handle and the existing mechanism into a final form that appears to function (although your lighter should NOT light as some of our modeling materials are flammable!)
- Fill and paint your final model to indicate CMF
Deliverables:
- At least 3 ideation models
- At least 2 refined models (including necessary voids and openings)
- 1 final model with lighter mechanism in place
- At least 1 rendering showing CMF
- Process book including photos/scans of all deliverables
